University of Chicago's Subterranean Library Breaks Ground
Sep 2008
H+P and architect Murphy/Jahn celebrated the recent groundbreaking for Mansueto Library, a subterranean addition to the Regenstein Library at the University of Chicago. The elliptical plan calls for 60 feet of the structure to be built below grade, which creates a single underground volume of nearly 1 million cubic feet. Library racks will be 50 feet tall and patrons who request volumes via the Internet will receive them through an automated retrieval system. It is set to open in 2010.
