University of Illinois, School of Architecture: Carrie Warner and Laura Kraft Guest Lecture

Oct 2009

Carrie provided an introduction to stability analysis and showed how H+P needed a method powerful enough to address all of the complexities which surfaced in the design of Russia Tower. Complexities had been introduced by, among other design features, columns at various slants, non-rigid floor diaphragms, building scale, and composite materials having non-linear behavior. Laura presented the details the Direct Analysis Method (AISC's newest), which is the method best-suited for taking advantage of cutting-edge computer programs. Students were provided with a simple example to take home. Carrie concluded by showing how H+P used the method to resolve the stability issues in Russia Tower. A short discussion among professors and students followed.
