HP's Form Finding Techniques help design teams
Jan 2010
Form finding deals with the shaping of shell structures to enhance membrane behavior. Such structural behavior is dramatically more efficient than carrying load through bending action of elements. Form finding can be utilized in simple 2d problems such as the shaping of an arch for a given span or for 3d surfaces.
H+P has successfully utilized form finding techniques in the UAE pavilion roof structure for the 2010 Shanghai Exposition. Through subtle manipulation of the original architectural form, H+P was able to dramatically reduce the structure system material quantities while improving performance, which resulted in a visually lighter and more efficient structure. H+P can collaborate in any of a number of BIM platforms, iteratively exchanging 3-d models to develop optimal, agreed forms.
