Dubai Pedestrian Bridges - Heritage Bridge

Bridge
unbuilt
The aesthetic form and support conditions drive the structural solution of the Heritage Bridge. Foster + Partners sought to span the bridge over 150 meters, with no intermediate supports, and maintain a minimally low profile. In tandem response, H+P developed a tube type structure to provide the structural depth needed at the center of the span, while calling upon the available arching action of the shallow, arched form. The final structure is a diagrid of steel pipes welded together--- oriented with diagonal crossing in each direction and series of smaller ‘hoop beams’ encircling the profile and linking the diagonalized nodes. These beams not only maintain the shape of the cross sections, but reduce overall stresses and deflections, and reduce the structural steel weight of the bridge.
