An open steel trellis for the exterior habitat compliments the architecture of this 2005 Chicago Building Congress Merit Award winner. The interior habitat structure relies on a waffle slab roof system, allowing tremendous flexibility in column and wall placement to accommodate the unique programming needs. The exposed concrete surfaces were a requirement for the ape habitats and allowed clean sightlines for zoo visitors.
