Transparency and energy efficiency were the focus for this bookless library on the Loyola University Lake Shore Campus, named as 2009’s Most Innovative Structure by the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois. Situated on the compact campus’s only remaining open space along Lake Michigan, maximizing views through the building was critical, but without increasing energy costs. H+P developed the thinnest profiled structure possible, to be visually exposed and integrated into the building’s energy concept. Post-tensioned girders and custom precast floor planks create the barrel vault framing system, and embedded radiant PEX tubes cycle water through the structure to help radiantly heat and cool the building. Natural ventilation and a double-skin curtain wall were also integrated. Since opening in January 2008, this LEED Silver building has used 60% less energy than ASHRAE standards.
