Housed beneath a 120 foot by 240 foot clear span dome, the subterranean addition to the University of Chicago's Regenstein library will feature an automated storage and retrieval shelving system for over 3.5 million volumes of print, as well as a reading room and preservation facilities. Its elliptical plan extrudes 60 feet below grade to create a single, underground volume of nearly 1,000,000 cubic feet. Given the structure's adjacency to the existing library and other campus buildings, the tie-backed slurry wall system by HP had to be carefully coordinated and designed to consider mutual effects on and by adjacent structures. HP also designed and detailed the interface of these walls with the complex dome roof structure (which itself is to be designed by a specialty sub-contractor and engineer) and up to 80 feet clear span interior floor framing.
