Collaborating with Chicago architect Koo and Associates, HP developed a cost-effective structural concept for this 27-story reinforced concrete hotel. The small site, located at State and Lake Streets in Chicago’s Loop, limited the architect’s options for an efficient typical hotel floor. HP designed a lateral system with two cores and minimal shear walls to fit within the most efficient floor plan and maximize the usable floor space. Additionally, column offsets were designed for the fifth floor to give larger column spacing at the hotel function levels without the need for costly transfer girders. The resulting savings were then used for a more unique and distinguished curtain wall.
