50 East Chestnut
Chicago, Illinois
Residential
completed
Rising in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast, this 500 foot tall residential building features one dwelling unit per floor. A key design issue was controlling accelerations at the top of this slender tower, given the high winds channeling around adjacent towers. HP collaborated with the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory to introduce the first Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs) used in Chicago; these were an economical solution to challenging site winds. HP’s structural scheme for this slender tower combines concrete core walls with two perimeter frames on the narrow faces. To maximize city views on the grand face, corner columns and spandrel beams were eliminated. The podium will house retail and parking functions as well as a landscaped rooftop garden.
