Residences at Riverbend

Chicago, Illinois

Residential

Bordered by the Chicago River to the east and commuter rail lines to the south and west, this narrow site remained undeveloped for many years. A unique structural concept was developed that addressed both the constraints of the site and the unusual plan of the condominium units. Reinforced concrete shear walls were hidden between units in an east-west direction to resist the large westerly wind loads. Exposed concrete moment frames were placed at the perimeter of the building to resist the smaller north-south wind loads. The structural solution thus creatively and efficiently nestles the building on the narrow site, while having minimal impact on unit layouts.
