Auditorium Theater Renovation
Chicago, Illinois
Renovation, Civic
completed
Adler & Sullivan’s landmark theater, completed for the 1893 Columbian Exposition with help from their new, young draftsman Frank Lloyd Wright, was outdated and needed significant renovations to stage Broadway-type shows. Soon after construction, the heavy building had settled from one to three feet. Although now stable, this condition made future structural modifications extremely challenging. Existing foundations were insufficient for some new loads; HP worked with the team to detail a reinforcing system of micro-piles and grade beams to be installed in the theater’s basement.
