Renovation

completed

Halvorson and Partners aided in the reconstruction efforts of a historic round barn from 1913 for a museum complex focused on the area's farming history. The barn had been dismantled after a partial roof collapse due to heavy snow and stored in a warehouse for several years. The goal was to reconstruct the barn to its original state using the salvaged wood, with the structural challenge to insure it also met current building codes. After a rigorous 3D analysis of the original structure, it was obvious that a more substantial structural system would be required. The structural system included a plywood reinforced shear wall core within the original center silo and custom scissor roof trusses able to adequately support snow loads and resist wind forces. The final reconstructed structure captures the essence of the original round barn.
