Green, Government

completed

As part of the former Mayor Daley’s green initiatives for Chicago, City Hall’s green roof was one of the first installations on a municipal building in the United States. As with all rooftop gardens, structural load conditions were a significant concern. Halvorson and Partners assessed the existing structure and helped configure heavy loads while minimizing reinforcement. Topping off the 11-story office building, the green roof has successfully improved air quality, saved the city thousands of dollars per year in utility costs, and became a nationally cited beacon of home government might lead the way in green initiatives – at relatively low cost to tax payers.
