Projects:
City Hall Green Roof
Chicago, Illinois
Green, Government
completed
As part of Mayor Daley’s green initiatives for Chicago, City Hall’s green roof was one of the first installations on a municipal building in the United States. As with all rooftop gardens, structural load conditions were a significant concern. Halvorson and Partners assessed the existing structure and helped configure heavy loads while minimizing reinforcement. Topping off the 11-story office building, the green roof has successfully improved air quality, reduced the urban heat island effect by approximately 70 degrees and saved the city thousands of dollars per year in utility costs.
