Atlanta Botanical Gardens Canopy Walkway

Atlanta

Pedestrian Bridge

under construction

The walkway at Atlanta Botanical Gardens is suspended up to 40 ft above the ground within the canopy of hundred-year-old trees using cable stays connected to four 65’ tall masts. HP worked closely with architect Jova/Daniels/Busby and designed the structure to have minimal intrusions in the garden terrain, resulting in the walkway’s light, elegant appearance that is visually integrated into the canopy. The plan geometry is a series of circular curves with a length of about 600 ft and a width of 11 ft. Five ‘overlooks’ widen the bridge and provide stopping points to enjoy the tree canopy. The walkway deck structure is a 30” diameter steel pipe offset from the walkway centerline. The resulting torsion of the deck is resisted by stiffness of the pipe and a tie-down cable system at the overlooks.
